How to determine what steps to take when windshield damage occurs

There are some kits that can be purchased through your local automotive supply store to repair windshield damage. Is that the best and safest option? Let's face it, the average person is unsure wheather the damage to their windshield is repairable or needs to be replaced. While the DIY kit is an option, the results will not match the professional results that you will have if a certified auto glass technician at Great Lakes Glass would provide. It could end up costing you more in the long run if the windshield fails! Here at Great Lakes Glass, Inc. we thought that it would be helpful to our current customers and potential future customers to explain how to determine what steps you should take when windshield damage occurs.

Find where the damage is located.

Where is the damage located?

Inspect your windshield. If there is damage along the edges of the windshield then your windshield warrants replacement, because any repair along the edge will weaken the integrity of the bond between the windshield and the metal frame around it. Is the damage in the driver's line of vision? If the damage to the windshield has created a blind spot for the driver, obscuring the line of sight out of both eyesm then the windshield must be replaced. Minor damage, small chips or cracks can be repaired in this area. However, due to the discoloration, unevenness, or mistiness that occurs with repair, a replacement may be recommended.

How large and deep is the area of damage?

New technologies have revolutionized the auto glass industry. Where it used to be that any damage that a quarter could not cover then reair was not an option. Today, cracks or chips over 6 inches in length can be repaired. Multiple cracks or chips in windshields also may meet the criteria for repair. So measure the damage on your windshield with a ruler and use these guidelines as you may be able to save yourself the cost of a replacement. Check the depth of the damage. Any damage that has penetrated through the layers of your windshield glass warrants replacement.

How to complete repair

Tools to complete repair.

If the damage meets the above criteria and is indeed repairable, then you can repair the damage yourself. Buy a repair kit that has a bridge-style. A syringe applicator has a simple piston, but some bridge applicators may have a unique mechanism. Identify the syringe or barrel where you load the resin, and the cap or O-ring to close it. Find the dial or bolt used to adjust pressure, moving the applicator into or away from the windshield.

Plan to use a UV lamp or sunlight as you will use resin and it will need the UV light or sunlight to cure

You must first, thoroughly clean the glass. It has to be free from any broken chards of glass, dust or dirt. You can use a blower, a hair dryer or a small amount of acetone or lighter fluid. In some instances you may have to drill a hole to fill the crack properly. Never drill more than 1/4 of an inch into the glass. Load the applicator with the resin supplied for your damage. Most repair kits come with a resin to fill cracks and to fill chips. Choose the correct one. You will need to position the suction cups so that the tip of the applicator is over the hole at the end of the crack. Apply the resin according to your kit's instructions. This usually means to move the applicator back and forth over the crack expelling a few drops of resin. Take due care and make sure the resin is filling the damaged area.

Cover the area with the supplied curing tape. This helps the resin to remain in place keeping it from oozing back out of the crack or chip. Keep the repaired area in full sunlight or under ultraviolet light until cured. This process can take anywhere from 30 minutes up to 120 minutes. After the process is complete remove the curing tape and scrape off any excess resin with a putty or Exacto knife. Clean your windshield with a glass cleaner and you are finished.
